Canoe Ama Plans
This is our waka ama canoe design showing the standard ama and attaching beams which come with those plans - the ama is simply tied to the beams and the beams are tied to the main hull giving some flexibility to the set up.. This ama is the first of at least two i will build (perhaps several...) it started out as two 2x4 and two 2x6 boards, and this lumber was glued and screwed, rough shaped with a draw knife and then. Designs / plans; outriggers for kayak; the woodenboat forum is sponsored by woodenboat publications, publisher of woodenboat magazine. the forum is a free service, and much like the "free" content on public radio, we hope you will support woodenboat by subscribing to this fabulous magazine. to leeward side of canoe of course. i have an ama.
Built 2004, iain oughtred designed 13 ft 5 in sailing canoe. decided that an ultralight sailing canoe wasn't our cup of tea, so we converted the boat to a trimaran using aka's and ama's designed. Like the very tiny ama of the skin on frame boat. i have not seen any reference to the length of the floats produced by your plans (though your pdf file “outriggers drop in eureka version b” shows the ama as about one half the boat length) … nor have i seen the function of ama length discussed anywhere.. An outrigger canoe is a very narrow canoe that would not be stable without the addition of a float on the end of a pair of beams to stabilize it. the advantage of making it very narrow is the ease with which it can be driven through the water and especially waves..
